So much is in a year. A year can hold the memory of a first glance, a first kiss, or a first adventure. A year can be immortalized as the time a love was lost or renewed. Some years are bold, spicy, and hot; others are cooler, lending themselves to rest more than activity.
As in life, wines are also shaped by the years. A wine’s vintage indicates the year its grapes were grown and the wine began its journey. With the exception of Champagnes, which are often crafted in a "cuvée" or blended style using grapes from various years, most wines are made from a single vintage harvest. Many factors influence the character of a vintage, with climate being the most significant.
A very hot, dry year can lead to overripe grapes lacking the acidity needed to balance the wine. Rainfall timing is also crucial. Early rains can affect how the berries set on the vines, potentially leading to smaller crops. Late rains might dilute the grapes' concentrated flavors. Winemaking is a delicate dance of nature’s whims and the winemaker’s expertise.

How Are Recent Napa Valley Cabernet Vintages Drinking?
Let’s explore the past four vintages of Napa Valley Cabernets:
2018 – This vintage is hailed as the highest-rated and most iconic in decades. The perfect balance of sun and rain created ideal conditions for extended ripening, allowing winemakers to pinpoint the optimal harvest time. The wines brilliantly highlight winemaking styles and vineyard nuances.
2019 – Another stellar year climate-wise, producing wines that are smooth, approachable, and brimming with lush, ripe fruit flavors.
2020 – During the Napa Valley harvest, one of the largest wildfires in its history devastated the region. Vineyards that hadn’t harvested yet faced smoke-tainted grapes, compromising production. As a result, finding a 2020 Napa Cabernet is rare.
2021 – This vintage is celebrated for ushering in a “new” Napa style. Moving away from overly fruit-forward Cabernets, 2021 wines emphasize freshness, earth-driven complexity, and balance. A drought early in the season resulted in smaller yields, which led to wines of remarkable depth and character. “Fresh” has become the buzzword for this new decade.
Whether selecting a wine to commemorate a meaningful year or savoring the unique qualities of its vintage, every bottle promises a one-of-a-kind experience.
